"Windsor" means more than the castle where the Queen of England resides. It also refers to a small city located in Sonoma County, California. Interestingly enough, there is a connection between the two places; the first postmaster of the town, Hiram Lewis, chose the name because the landscape in the area called to mind the countryside surrounding Windsor Castle.
Although the town has fewer than 30,000 permanent residents, vacation homes in Windsor attracts visitors primarily because of the community's fondness for putting on festivals that celebrate various aspects of the local arts and culture scene. For example, every year in April, people congregate on the Windsor Town Green to celebrate the Earth Day and Wellness Festival.
Celebrating Cinco Through Cultura y Carnaval
This April celebration is generally followed about a week later by the "Celebrating Cinco Through Cultural y Carnaval" festival, which aims to recognize the contributions of Mexican culture to California in general and Windsor in particular. Also taking place on the Windsor Town Green, this festival takes note of several ethnic groups with such activities as Pomo Native American dancers, folk dances from Mexico, and Chinese Lion Dancers.
There is more than dancing to enjoy; the event also features demonstrations of martial arts, a car show offering up-close glimpses of low-rider vehicles, and a variety of ethnic food.
The Windsor Fine Arts Show
For a completely different atmosphere, visit Windsor in June when a three-day event has fine artists from the entire region congregating here to display their works.
