Ventura: Gateway to the Channel Islands
Ventura is a shortened name for the City of San Buenaventura, which serves as the seat of county government in Ventura County, California. This community has been official since 1866, just a few years after the California Gold Rush and the onset of statehood. At the present time, almost 110,000 residents make Ventura their home, creating a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere for the tourists who come to stay in holiday homes in Ventura.
Ventura is well regarded for its surfing spots, with many visitors desiring to see Surfer's Point, which is located near the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Another popular tourist venue is the Mission San Buenaventura, one of a string of missions first established by priests back when California was a territory in the worldwide Spanish empire.
A good place to start exploring Ventura is at the Visitors Center located on California Street in the downtown area. Here, in a facility, more than 4,000 square feet in area, tourists can learn about the local arts and crafts scene, and get information about both the Channel Islands National Park located off the coast and Heritage Valley. Guidebooks and maps are also available here to assist visitors as they continue to explore on their own.
Visitors should also be sure to investigate Ventura Harbor Village, where a variety of seafood restaurants and eclectic small shops are available. More information can be seen here about Channel Islands National Park since the headquarters are at the harbor facility. Boats leaving for the Channel Islands are moored in the harbor and they make trips each day.
