Tahoe City: Gateway to Donner Pass
Situated in Placer County, California, Tahoe City is not actually a legal city at all, but rather a community sitting on unincorporated county land. Tahoe City used to simply be called Tahoe, but was renamed to help distinguish it from the nearby lake of the same name. Indeed, Tahoe City is located right on Lake Tahoe, one of California's largest and most magnificent fresh water lakes. This places it at a high elevation, over 6,000 feet, in the Sierra Nevada mountain chain.
Tahoe City is located just 14 miles away from Donner Pass, which means it is a prime location for visitors who wish to delve more deeply into key events in United States and California history. Donner Pass, of course, is the famous site where a party attempting to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the 1840s became snowbound and had to survive the winter here, before any habitable dwellings or the other trappings of civilization had been constructed. This group, known forever after as the Donner Party, suffered greatly, but some of their members survived in a testament to the human spirit of endurance.
Vacation rentals in Tahoe City make it easy to explore the Donner Pass area. In addition to the interesting history of the region, there are also ample recreational opportunities in both summer and winter. Rock climbing and ice climbing are both popular in season, as are backpacking and snow camping. Nearby ski resorts also offer skiing and snowboarding opportunities.
