Located in Olympic Valley in the state of California, Squaw Valley comprises one of the biggest ski areas in the nation. Only the Heavenly Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe is larger. Because it hosted the Winter Olympics in 1960, the Squaw Valley Ski resort is often simply called Olympic Valley. The opportunity to participate in alpine sports such as downhill skiing is a primary reason why tourists come to this area and stay in vacation homes in Squaw Valley.
Squaw Valley boasts not only 33 different chairlifts that allow skiers and snowboarders to enjoy the slopes, but it also features the only funitel lift in the nation. A funitel lift provides a very rapid way to reach high altitudes and allows many people to be transported at once, which leads to shorter wait times in the ski lift lines. They are also considered safer than some other kinds of ski lifts because they hang from two cables rather than one, a feature that also makes them more stable in high winds. Due to its funitel lift and excellent slope quality, more than half a million skiers each year make Squaw Valley their ski resort of choice.
Squaw Valley is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain chain and spreads over six different mountain peaks. The base elevation of the resort is over 6,000 feet, but some runs take skiers up as high as 9,000 feet above sea level. In all, the area received about 40 feet of snow each winter.
