Sebastopol: Apples and Grapes

Sebastopol can refer to places in the Crimea as well as in Australia, but when it comes to California tourism, the name refers to a city located in Sonoma County. This places it in Northern California, approximately 50 miles to the north of the vast metropolis of San Francisco. This makes it relatively simple for tourists staying in vacation rentals in Sebastopol to pop down to San Francisco for a day trip so they can see famous sites such as Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge.

There is no need to journey far for things to do, however, since Sebastopol itself offers visitors a wealth of entertainment of its own. The population of the town hovers around 7,500, though the greater area surrounding it has around 50,000 inhabitants. Just a 20-minute drive will take tourists over to the Pacific Ocean where they can swim and sunbathe during the summer, and sit on the sand to watch the crashing waves during the winter.

One of Sebastopol's great draws, however, is its agricultural tradition. The area was once well known for its apples and plums, and while fruit orchards are still scattered through the area, many orchards have now shifted production to the growing of wine grapes. Still, every year the city celebrates an Apple Blossom Festival along with a fair devoted to celebrating the Gravenstein variety of apple.

Sebastapol is also a haven of liberal politics where people are not afraid to sit and discuss their views in the town's cafs and coffee houses.
