Located in Marin County, California, Sausalito is one of the cities making up the San Francisco Bay Area. It is situated about eight miles south of San Rafael at an elevation of a mere 13 feet, making it a sea-level city in the truest sense of the word. The closest attraction is the Golden Gate Bridge, which northern end almost touches Sausalito. Although the area was once important in the shipbuilding industry, today it has a reputation for being a picturesque community that attracts both an artistic element and those with considerable wealth. Vacation rentals in Sausalito allow easy access to the Golden Gate National Recreational Area that surrounds much of the town.
The Houseboat Community
Sausalito is an unusual city in California because the north edge of the city actually features a houseboat community. Hundreds of houseboats of varied sizes and shapes as well as monetary values are gathered more-or-less together in this area, which is about two miles from the downtown sections of Sausalito. Although a thriving residential community, the boats themselves are a tourist attraction because so many of them were made from abandoned boats and other materials abandoned or decommissioned at the close of World War II.
Other boats in the community are of newer construction and designed by famed architects. Several of these have been photographed for major magazines, which mean the Sausalito Houseboat Community is known far beyond the city limits and it provides a reason for people to stay in holiday homes here to see them firsthand.
