The cityscape of Santa Monica will be familiar to anyone who has seen episodes of the long-running television series Three's Company. Just as the credits of that show portrayed the main characters having fun on the Santa Monica Pier, so too can tourists staying in holiday homes in Santa Monica today enjoy the miniature amusement park on the beach that attracts countless visitors each year.
The Santa Monica Pier
Also known as Pacific Park, the Pier is a family-oriented theme park with several carnival rides including a Ferris wheel. From the top of this wheel, tourists can enjoy vistas of the Pacific Ocean stretching out to the west and the skyline of Santa Monica and beyond it, Los Angeles, to the east.
Pacific Park also features a merry-go-round or carousel that dates from the 1920s and an arcade as well as shops and restaurants. The pier itself allows visitors to walk far out over the Pacific Ocean. A popular activity on the end of the pier is fishing for the species of salt-water fish that inhabit local waters.
The Entertainment Connection
Because of its proximity to Hollywood, a great many movies and television shows have been filmed in Santa Monica. Tourists can go running along the shore just as Sylvester Stallone did in scenes from Rocky III, or visit the airport to relive the potent visual images of a city being destroyed in the disaster movie 2012. The beach itself has been heavily featured in the Baywatch television series.
