Mill Valley: Nature on San Francisco's Doorstep

Mill Valley, California, is a scenic city located in Marin County. This places it about four miles to the north of the large coastal city of San Francisco. To reach Mill Valley from San Francisco, visitors must travel across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, long regarded as a symbol of California itself. The population in Mill Valley hovers around 14,000 permanent inhabitants, making it a lovely small town nestled along the shores of Richardson Bay.

Mill Valley is characterized by relatively open spaces, making it a haven near the urban areas of Northern California. It occupies both a flat area near the coastline and narrow forested canyons, as well as some areas best described as marshlands. The forests are composed of redwood trees, though these trees are second-generation growth, they are impressive because the coastal California redwood generally grows to a large size quite rapidly.

The city is also located adjacent to the Muir Woods National Monument, named after famed naturalist John Muir who explored much of California's wild lands in the 1800s and sought its preservation through legislation creating a national park system. Tourists staying in vacation rentals in Mill Valley can easily take a day trip into the Muir Woods area and explore its network of hiking trails. It is equally easy, however, to leave nature behind and take a day trip into the city of San Francisco where tourists can visit such famed locations as Chinatown.
