Manhattan Beach is a seaside community situated in the southwest of Los Angeles County. Long known for its surfing opportunities, the beach experiences particularly large waves during the winter, when they can rise as tall as 12 feet above the surface of the ocean. It is situated in between other beach cities, notably El Segundo and Hermosa Beach, both of which offer tourists staying in holiday rentals in Manhattan Beach with some excellent surfing locations.
Manhattan Beach is considered an affluent community where the average price of a home may stretch into the millions of dollars and where the average household income actually exceeds $3 million. In part, this is because the lovely views and climate here have attracted a number of very highly paid sports celebrities, among them Tiger Woods.
Because Manhattan Beach is within easy driving distance of Los Angeles, tourists to the area who tire of surfing, swimming, and sunbathing in the waters of the Pacific Ocean can easily reach other area attractions such as the Los Angeles Museum of Art. This large complex also includes the site of tar pits that trapped a large number of prehistoric mammals whose bones are now on display in the La Brea Tar Pits Museum. Open tar pits can still be seen at this site, and the largest of them contain a statue representing a woolly mammoth, mired in the tar and cannot pull himself out.
The city is the site of much movie filming, and it was heavily featured in movies such as Point Break, Starsky Hutch, and Jerry McGuire.
