Mono County, California has just a single incorporated city: Mammoth Lakes, which has a population of some 8000 permanent residents. The county is located along California's border with the state of Nevada. This places Mammoth Lakes in eastern California. The community is nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is famous for its ski area, which draws large number of visitors from Los Angeles. Many such visitors choose to stay in vacation homes in Mammoth Lakes during both winter and summer since the local area has much to offer even when the ski slopes have closed for the season.

Since the elevation of Mammoth Lakes is almost 8,000 feet, the area receives abundant snowfall in the winter and experiences mild summers. One of the more unusual activities that tourists enjoy during all four seasons is to visit the local hot springs areas. Many of the springs are open for swimming or bathing; those that are too hot for safe immersion are marked. The Mammoth Lakes area can even boast the highly unusual geologic formation of a 'hot creek' in which hot springs bubble up along a certain stretch of river rather than in isolated pockets.

Another popular activity is to rent a car and travel along State Route 203, which traverses Minaret Summit and then descends into a valley containing Devil's Postpile National Monument. Here, tourists can see evidence of lava flows and other geologic activity related to the Long Valley Caldera, which formed from the remains of an ancient volcano.
