Los Angeles: The Heart of Sunny California

Los Angeles is not the capital of California, but with almost 4 million inhabitants, it is certainly the most populated. Indeed, apart from New York City, it is the largest metropolis by population in the entire nation. Unlike many cities in the Southern California region, Los Angeles is huge, occupying more than 450 square miles. However, when people from around the United States say "Los Angeles" or "L.A.," they are most often thinking not of the city proper but of the greater metropolitan area it occupies. This area is one of the most heavily populated in the world and has almost 13 million permanent residents.

With so many people choosing to live here or come to stay in vacation homes in Los Angeles, it only stands to reason that there must be a great wealth of things to do. Los Angeles is not just an important city in the U.S., but also a world center for culture, fashion, media, sports, and entertainment. In fact, L.A.'s nickname is the 'Entertainment Capital of the World' in part because the city encompasses Hollywood, which has long made a name for itself for the production of motion pictures and television programs. This tie-in means that a great many famous names make their homes in and around L.A. and many long-time residents can report a celebrity sighting or two.

Visitors to the area sometimes make a sport of this activity, taking bus tours that go past the homes of the rich and famous.
