The Northern California town of Lakeport has gone by several names during its history, which began with settlement by non-Native Americans in the mid-1850s. Over the course of the decades, it has been variously called Rocky Point, Stony Point, Forbestown, and Tuckertown. These days, Lakeport serves as the county seat in Lake County, which is located north of San Francisco but slightly inland. The population of Lakeport hovers around 5,000 permanent inhabitants.
Tourists who come to stay in vacation homes in Lakeport can take advantage of the wonderful climate here, much of which derives from the fact that the town sits at an elevation of slightly less than 1400 feet. This means that summers in the area, which also includes Clear Lake, are predominately warm and dry. A summer vacation in Lakeport therefore usually involves very little inclement weather; visitors can be outdoors all day, enjoying the area, without fear that their time off work and school may be spoiled by rain that keeps them inside when they would rather be hiking or fishing.
Winters in Lakeport are also charming because the average temperature rarely falls below freezing, and some days range upwards as warm as 53 degrees. Winters are a time when there is more precipitation, which mainly takes the form of rain, although the nearby mountains are blanketed with snow on occasion.
Lakeport is of interest to geologists because the Cobb Mountain area features a large number of earthquake fault lines. The San Andreas Fault can be visited just 30 miles away from Lakeport.
