Natural Recreation at Lake Almanor

Lake Almanor is located in one of the least visited regions of California: the northeast. Because the area is sparsely populated, holiday rentals near Lake Almanor can provide visitors with a quiet atmosphere where they can breathe deeply the clean air scented of pine trees. The lake itself is a manmade reservoir with a capacity of more than a million acre-feet of water. At its maximum depth, the lake reaches 90 feet. It is located along the Feather River and also provides easy access to a number of natural springs as well as several other creeks including Last Chance Creek and Benner Creek.

A popular area attraction is the local dam and spillway, which together are responsible for the creation of Lake Almanor. The dam, built in the 1920s, is 130 feet high. Now owned by the Pacific Gas Electric Company, the dam was originally named after the three daughters of the then owner, Guy Earl. His daughters were Alice, Martha, and Eleanor.

In addition to the dam itself, the lake area is quite popular for recreation in local region. Fishing and boating are available, as well as water skiing and swimming. Some reservoirs in California no longer allow people and boats to enter the water, but at Lake Almanor, these activities are both permitted and encouraged.

Local communities around the dam include Hamilton Branch, Canyon Dam, Chester, and Prattville. Parts of the lake are located in Lassen National Forest.
