In addition to a long expanse of tan sand free of large rocks and other obstructions, the city features a wooden pier that reaches several hundred feet into the ocean. Situated in the area known as the South Bay, Hermosa Beach is surrounded by other beach cities including Manhattan Beach, located just north, and Redondo Beach, which lies both south and east of Hermosa Beach.

The city boasts almost 20,000 permanent inhabitants, many of which make regular beach-going a way of life, even during the winter months since most days in January in Southern California are cool rather than cold.
