Groveland: Gateway to Yosemite

Groveland is a small community of about 600 permanent residents located in Tuolumne County, California. Situated at an elevation above 3,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains that bisect a large part of the state, Groveland is surrounded by an alpine forest of tall pine trees and looks particularly beautiful during the months from November to February when frequent snowfalls turn the area into a true winter wonderland.

Winter is a good time to stay in vacation homes in Groveland in any case because of the town's importance as one of the gateways to Yosemite National Park. The Big Oak Flat entrance to the park stays open in the winter, something that is not true of some of the other entrances, such as the one at Tioga Pass. Tourists coming to Groveland can drive into Yosemite and proceed down to the valley floor where they will find that small lakes are frozen over and perhaps more importantly, that crowds in Yosemite are at a minimum during the winters.

Another option is to visit Groveland in the summer, which features temperatures that are cooled due to the elevation. Proceeding into Yosemite during this season will mean more crowds, but also the opportunity to see the park's spectacular waterfalls at their most magnificent after the spring thaw has swollen the local rivers. Popular activities in the park include hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing and there are several interpretative centers and guided trails to help visitors understand the natural and human history of this spectacular natural area of California.
