Located in Humboldt County along the coast of Northern California, Ferndale is a small town of fewer than 1,500 people, all of whom live within a single square mile of the city's limits. Ferndale has an elevation of just 50 feet, which places it very nearly at sea level, and has been an incorporated city since 1893.
Two of the most popular reasons why visitors come to stay in holiday homes in Ferndale are the Coastal Redwood Forest located nearby and the Lost Coast region.
The Coast Redwoods
There are few places in the world where one can see the California coastal redwoods, which grow only in a very narrow range. Groves exist from Monterey to the southwestern edge of the state of Oregon, but Ferndale is an ideal place to see them because here the groves are both thick and easily accessible. To see the oldest and tallest of these magnificent trees, tourists need to hike down into gullies and valleys that receive frequent fog, as this species loves moisture.
The Lost Coast
This phrase refers to a section of the Pacific coast of California located in Humboldt and Mendocino counties. Called the Lost Coast because of its largely undeveloped nature, this stretch of the coastline stretches from Ferndale to Rockport, and features rugged coastal mountains that provide wonderful hiking opportunities with views of the sea.
There are few official roads in the region because of the difficulty of building in the steep terrain. This means that the area has been left largely to the wild and it is a place where tourists can see the original natural habitat of coastal California.
