Not to be confused with Los Cerritos, which is a community in the Southern California city of Long Beach, El Cerrito is located in Contra Costa County in the northern half of the state. Interestingly, the town was first settled by people who had fled the city of San Francisco in the wake of the devastating 1906 earthquake. By 1909, the settlement was large enough to merit a post office of its own, and El Cerrito has never looked back.
The name 'El Cerrito' is a Spanish phrase referring to a small hill or knoll, which is a bit amusing considering that the city is located at an elevation of a mere 69 feet. For all it was founded by earthquake refugees, it is not very far from San Francisco proper and is located along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. This provides tourists staying in holiday homes in El Cerrito with outstanding views of both the city of San Francisco and of the Golden Gate Bridge.
El Cerrito is served by two major airports, each of which is located less than 30 miles away. This makes it simple for visitors to reach El Cerrito from almost any place in the nation or indeed, the world. Also nearby is the city of Berkeley, which has two Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations. These make it easy for tourists to explore the Bay Area region without having to navigate the area by car.
