Situated in Lake County, California, Clearlake is an inland city with about 15,000 permanent residents. The city has an interesting history. Well-settled enough to have a post office in the 1920s, Clearlake has changed its name twice: first to Clearlake Park during the 1930s, and then back to Clearlake in the 1980s when the community became an incorporated city that would have its own administration rather than be governed by the county. The elevation of Clearlake is about 1500 feet, making it high enough above sea level that the summer temperatures are pleasantly warm rather than hot, as can happen in some parts of inland California.
One of the great attractions of Clearlake, and one of the reasons that holiday homes and rentals in Clearlake are so popular, is the close proximity of Clear Lake, a lake that has the distinction of being the largest freshwater lake to be located completely within California. Many of the state's residents are unaware of this natural wonder and believe that Lake Tahoe holds this distinction, but Tahoe, of course, is disqualified because part of it lies in the adjoining state of Nevada.
Clear Lake is the dominant feature in the geography of Lake County, which is a place where fishermen and boating enthusiasts like to come during spring, summer, and autumn. Wilderness activities such as hiking and backpacking are also popular here due to the large number of national and state protected regions such as Mendocino National Forest, Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest, and Loch Lomond Vernal Pool Ecological Reserve. In addition, Clear Lake itself is located inside Clear Lake State Park.
