In the Spanish language, 'cazadero' means hunter. This makes it an appropriate name for this lovely community located along the Pacific Coast of California in Sonoma County. With a population of less than 400 people, Cazadero is a modest little town consisting of a slice of Americana: a general store, a hardware store, a post office, and a couple of tiny churches. Truly, staying in vacation rentals in Cazadero is like stepping back to a simpler, more wholesome time.
Although the town is not far from California State Route 116, giving it excellent access to the more urbanized areas to the south, notably the large city of San Francisco, the majority of local attractions are rural in nature.
Cazadero itself is located at the confluence of the Russian River and Austin Creek. Plant life is still vibrant and diverse in the area, and it includes such tree species as the California coastal redwood as well as oaks, bay trees, and tanoaks. There are also fairly rare plants in the region. Most notably, the calypso orchid grows here amid the ferns and redwoods that populate the forest.
Bird watching is a popular activity in Cazadero, with ravens, Steller's jays, great egrets, and great blue herons among the more notable species to be seen. Also commonly spotted are woodpeckers and hummingbirds. Large animal life in the area includes bobcats, coyotes, foxes, and wild boars. Fishing is also popular, with steelhead and Coho salmon some of the more sought-after varieties in local waters.
