Capitola is a city located along the Monterey Bay coast and this places it in Santa Cruz County. The city is notable for being the location that inspired Alfred Hitchcock's famous movie The Birds. Originally established in the late 1800s, Capitola is older than any other beach resort city on the West Coast of the United States. Today, it is known for its eclectic local shops, a large swimming beach, and a wharf from which fishermen still cast their lines.
Capitola has only about 10,000 residents, but for such a small city, it packs a large 'punch' in terms of a summer camp that draws large numbers of visitors to book vacations in holiday rentals in Capitola.
Summer Camp for Junior Lifeguards
Since 1980, Capitola Beach has been used each summer to host a camp intended to train junior lifeguards. Children who attend have the opportunity to learn about water safety, lifesaving, and first aid techniques. They also acquire skills related to physical fitness and learn to be good sports both in and out of the water.
The summer camp is structured around programs designed for many age ranges, with divisions including Little Guards for children as young as six, Junior Guards for those aged from 9-15, and the 'Captain's Corp', which serves children who are 16 and 17 years old. Activities provided include beach games, ocean fames, mock rescues, and a variety of competitions.
