A Brief Introduction
Welcome to River House, a five-bedroom, three-bath 2,600-square foot Queen-Anne style home on a private road near Tamworth, in eastern New Hampshire near the Maine border, Squam Lake and Lake Winnipesauke. South Tamworth is about 1.5 hours from Manchester airport, and 2.5 hours from Boston.
The house sleeps up to 15 people, and almost all of the beds (one king, two queens and five twins) are brand-new, with new linens. The beds themselves sleep up to 11, plus we have two hide-a-beds that sleep four more. August 2006 marks the end of a one-year, comprehensive remodel of the home, with new bedrooms, baths, kitchen, plumbing, insulation and wiring
The kitchen features beadboard cabinets, a central island and butcher-block countertops, along with a modern refrigerator, stove and range. Each bathroom has a shower and full bathtub. The original deck and screen porch remain.
History
The property is around 150 years old. Originally built as a large private home, it later served as a two-room schoolhouse until 1946. The rental includes a large meadow next to the house, along with some 78 acres of forest out back, with protected woods surrounding the property.
The front of the house overlooks a river with a sandy little beach right out front, across a quiet dirt road. The river has small rapids that make for excellent refreshing swims, with plenty of warm rocks for sunning yourself.
Peace and Quiet
Only two other homes exist on this side of the river, and they’re down the road, so it’s very peaceful and private. The house has a large great room in each story, so adults with families can relax downstairs while the kids play upstairs. With the windows open at night, the sound of the river provides a peaceful accompaniment to a sound sleep. (After a few nights at the house, it may be hard to sleep anywhere else.)
On August 13, we ended a ten-day visit to River House, during which we worked 14-hour days to put back all the furniture and attend to countless details (towel rods, coat hooks, etc.) following our major remodeling project. The house has gone quite dramatically from a rather "rustic" country home to an extremely pleasant, cozy and (dare I say it) luxurious house
The all-new kitchen is actually nicer than the one at our regular house, and the ground floor is entirely new. The architect, Cathy's father, has done simply amazing work on the house: It is structurally as tight as a drum, and has new bedrooms, baths, interior walls, insulation, plumbing, electricity, heating ... you name it. Yet by using the original doors, windows, beadboard and trim, the house has also retained its traditional charm and warmth. It is simply amazing now. We also "put in" a new front yard, with pavers, a large parking pad and flower beds. Please mouse over the pictures to the right and see the new interior shots!
The Paths
To either side of the house, east or west, the private dirt road extends into the woods. To the west, it becomes a trail, perfect for hiking, running or mountain biking, that runs 13 miles up the river to a gorgeous set of waterfalls. To the east, the road peters out just past a lovely meadow.
A short walk up the street will bring you to the lovely United Methodist Church, or walk down the road to the old Country Store, which offers various foods, gas, magazines, movies, and other goods. Kids love to walk there for candy.
The River & Mountains
From our front door you can walk up the side of the Ossippee Mountains, which are part of a ring dyke—one of a only a few in the world—a circle of mountains that once formed the sides of a volcano, long since extinct. The road out front parallels a gorgeous brook, which cascades down the side of the mountain through the volcanic rock, and down a seemingly endless series of waterfalls and crystal-clear granite bowls. You can walk up the brook itself, but please bear in mind that the adjoining lands are private property.
Things to Do
If you get tired of hiking or relaxing by the house, there are innumerable local activities to keep you occupied. In the winter, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, hiking, snowmobiling and hunting await. In the summer, sailing, mountain biking, canoeing, hiking, kayaking, tennis, golf, photography, square dancing, live theater, hunting, and myriad other pastimes are within easy reach.
A few miles east of the house you will pass the Club Motorsports Raceway (still under construction), then hit Route 16, which heads south into Ossippee, then east to Freedom, or north to Conway.
The nearby town of Tamworth (population 2,510) dates back to 1766, and features the lovely Cook Library, Remick’s Store, the Other Store, and the Barnstormer’s Theater, which boasts that it is “the oldest professional summer theatre in the country.” The Tamworth Town Hall hosts historic square dancing and contra dancing on the second floor on Saturday nights.
Travel west and you’ll hit Moultonborough in about 15 minutes and Meredith in 25 minutes. Both towns lie on Lake Winnipesauke, a huge lake with countless islands, inlets, bays and beaches. The entire region around Squam Lake is also full of hikes, water sports, and mountains with breathtaking views.
And More
Finding things to do is not the problem; making a choice is what’s hard. The whole area features swimming, boating, sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, rafting, hiking, biking, golf, horseshoes, miniature golf, amusement parks, fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, shopping, restaurants, live theater, cinemas, museums, sightseeing, along with attractions like Castle in the Clouds, Fun Spot, Polar Caves, and Story Land.
Ski areas are plentiful and close. You can stay at our house and drive to a multitude of resorts within easy driving distance, yet remain out of congested tourist areas.
