Aptos Offers Access to Both Beaches and Forests

Aptos is a small California community of slightly over 6,000 people. Located in Santa Cruz County, Aptos is often regarded to be more of a regional marker; in this sense it includes several small towns and villages and can boast perhaps as many as 25,000 permanent inhabitants. These communities include Seacliff, Rio del Mar, La Selva Beach, Seascape, and Aptos Village.

Vacation homes in Aptos provide access to two state recreational areas maintained by the state government of California: the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park and Seacliff State Beach. Access to these two locations explains why the Aptos area is so popular with tourists. From a 'home base' in Aptos, visitors can explore and enjoy two completely different ecosystems and cultures: California beach life and the coastal forest.

Tourists enjoy both hiking and mountain biking activities in Nisene Marks, which contains an interesting geological quirk: the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake's epicenter is located in the park. This quake measured more than seven on the Richter scale.

The beaches in Aptos are popular with both visitors and locals. Favorite activities here include not just surfing, but also body boarding, bike riding, and skateboarding. The beaches feature a sand bottom devoid of many large rocks. While this makes them ideal for swimming and other activities, it also means that the wave shape produced for surfing is relatively gentle compared to that of some neighboring beaches. This makes Aptos beaches a good place for novice surfers such as tourists who have never tried it before.
