Not many cities can boast of being a California Historical Landmark instead of just containing one or more such sites, but then, not many cities are Angels Camp, California. Located in Calaveras County, the city has fewer than 4,000 permanent residents and is the only incorporated city in its region. Over the course of its history, it has gone by several names including City of Angels, Carson's Creek, and Clearlake.
Angels Camp provided the basis of Mark Twain's famous short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" and indeed, celebrates this heritage with a Jumping From Jubilee held each spring at the fairgrounds located slightly to the east.
The town is heavily associated with gold mining and originally served as a trading post that supplied miners all around the area. After placer mining died out, a second gold rush brought people back to mine veins of quartz that contained gold. Over $20 million of the precious metal was processed by mills in Angels Town, and many visitors who stay in vacation homes in Angels Camp come here in order to enjoy the historic ambiance of the town and try their hand at a spot of gold mining themselves.
Other popular activities in Angels Camp include taking a walking tour of the historic district to see buildings that were in place when Mark Twain frequented the town. Angels Creek, which runs through the town, provides a nice place to picnic in spring and summer.
