Property Details

Fairchase Keep lies in the lush, rolling hills of the western Catskill Mts., adjacent to the southern tier region of New York State, an area rich in culture and unspoiled natural beauty. The keep is known locally as "a grand old place," and is situated in a gorgeous valley populated with abundant wildlife. The house is bordered by over 1,000 acres of state forest designated "Forever Wild," so the house not only will retain its seclusion and privacy, but will continue to allow unfettered access to hunting, hiking, crosscountry skiing, and snowmobiling.
The Keep was renovated and enlarged in 2006-7 and is designed to enable a variety of uses. The guest quarters, approx. 3,500 sq. ft.,consists of three separate suites with living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms, each with a private entrance. A columned porch surrounds the new wing, with radiant heat in the sidewalk, which prevents snow build-up in winter. The interiors are beautifully appointed, with designer wallcoverings.
The views from the complex are of broad fields and woodlands, their beauty varying with the seasons. On any given day, deer can be seen in the meadows and songbirds fill the air with music. On still moonlit nights owls can be heard calling their mates, and in the spring and fall the honking of migrating Canadian Geese fills the sky. With luck, some years a few pair decide to "winter over" on the pond across from the property being sold. Its name is listed on maps as "Beaver Pond," and it's a virgin mini-lake with a backdrop of pine trees and forest. Occasionally, herons are sighted and mallards frequently make it their home. There is only one other landowner besides the state bordering the pond, and it's a seldom used cabin at the far other end. A stream flows out of the pond and through the property, affording the soothing sounds of flowing water much of the year.
Aside from the beauty of the house itself, the real strength of this property is its apparent remove from civilization, as no neighbors are visible, in fact, there are only two other individuals who reside within a mile of the property; the road it's located on is a non through road, and the only sounds are an occasional airplane and the sounds provided by nature. Yet, it's located equidistantly , about six miles in either direction, from the major routes of 17 (I 86) and interstate 88. It's thirty minutes to Binghamton, 1 1/2 hours to Albany, and 2 1/2 hours to the George Washington Bridge entering Manhattan. By helicopter the time is in minutes, and the meadow adjoining the complex is large enough to accommodate a landing.
The etymology of the name "Fairchase Keep" is two-fold. While decades of deer, grouse and pheasant hunting have been pursued, no "unfair" hunting methods have ever been allowed, thus the commonly employed hunting term of "fairchase." The many groupings of trees (also known as a "chase") throughout the property are quite beautiful ("fair"), thus "Fairchase" again. A keep is the safe heart of a castle, and the house lies snuggled in a valley, a "keep" of sorts, and since the family has kept the house for so long, "keep" applies as a play on words, as well. The house is elegant and sturdy both, and has protected, sheltered and afforded joyous homecomings to three generations and their friends, seeping the very walls in harmony. Visitors often comment they attain a peaceful state while staying here and hate to leave. The stateliness of the house, the beauty of its setting, and the presence of birds and animals all conspire to make one feel, as one guest stated, "As though you're living in an English country house with a game preserve."
