A Unique Experience

You are not just a guest at The British Place – you are my guest in my home. The concept of this British-style bed and breakfast has its roots in the boarding houses of Northern England. My grandmother ran one such place: somewhere where people working away from their families could experience a home away from home. They could choose to interact with her family or keep to themselves as they wished. Often great friendships formed between her boarders, and with their host, too.

After my children left home, college-bound, I followed in my grandmother’s footsteps and began to offer accommodation to people working in the wonderful town of Santa Cruz. I offered home-stays to students from Japan, and business people from overseas who wanted to see a more than the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley.
I enjoy interacting with my guests. Having traveled extensively throughout the world, often staying in impersonal motels and hotels, I would have relished the opportunity to stay in someone’s home, experiencing the comfort, and yes, seeing the quirks, of their lives.
What to expect:

The house was built around 1910, and the interior is designed to complement the architecture of that period. English antique furniture blends with modern art, and soft wool rugs add comfort to the Brazilian cherry floor. (Please pack slippers in your overnight bag.) Hand-made quilts and photographs of my travels adorn the walls, adding color and texture. The window seat makes a perfect place to observe birds at close hand as they breakfast from the feeders

On arrival you can fix yourself a cocktail, enjoy a cold beer (or be brave – and try a British pint at room temperature!) and settle yourself with a good book on the deck and watch the passion flowers wafting in the breeze, listening to the distant bark of the sea-lions. Stroll down to Westcliff drive (6 mins) one of California’s most diverse nature walks, with sure sightings of pelicans, cormorants, sea-lions, sea otters, star fish and sea anemones. Or maybe head to Natural Bridges State Park (25 mins) to witness the winter home of the Monarch butterflies. The Wharf with its multitude of shops and restaurants, and the Boardwalk are landmarks of history. A 30-minute walk can have you drinking morning coffee on the Wharf or sampling one of the fine seafood restaurants there. If the weather is British you can stay ‘home’ and watch a movie, read, play the lovely Yamaha grand piano, or drive downtown (5 mins) to sample the delights of Pacific Avenue. If you like you can even cook dinner or do your laundry!

The master bedroom has a Queen size four-poster double bed and TV. The bathroom features a claw foot bathtub. Relax in the comfy den with fully loaded cable TV, video and DVD player, CD player and – yes, turntable! High speed wireless internet is available throughout the house.

A simple continental breakfast is available – toast, cereal, yogurt, fruit, and – crumpets. For a cooked breakfast or brunch try Zachary’s or the Walnut Café downtown.

I have a kitten, so if you have allergies to cats please consider one of the many alternative accommodations offered in sunny Santa Cruz.
